I am devastated to share the news that my beloved Arthur has passed away suddenly after an episode of laminitis. Arthur was my best friend, and over the past 16 years, he made so many of my dreams come true. He and I travelled the world together, competing at events that I had only dreamed of when I was younger. We had many moments of triumph, and some moments of heartbreak, but in every moment, I was always incredibly proud to be his partner, and his person. Arthur taught me what a true partnership meant and looked like, and a part of my heart will belong to him forever.

Thank you to my parents and the remarkable members of the Arthur Syndicate for your unwavering support over the years. Arthur was lucky to have a remarkable team behind him every step of the way, from his many grooms and the working students who spent hours caring for him, to his team of vets, farriers and beyond. I will never be able to express my true gratitude for all you did for him to help him feel his best for so long. I would be remiss if I did not thank the many people who cheered us on from near and far. Arthur loved nothing more than a photo op or an adoring fan, and he appreciated each and every one of you.

“Arty” was a party in every sense of the word, even if at times that party was one he created in his own mind. I will never stop missing him. If it were up to me, Arthur would have lived forever, but I will forever be grateful I was the person in the world he chose to love most.”
-Allison

Arthur is a 17 hand liver chestnut Irish Thoroughbred gelding. With his great presence, breathtaking movement, and huge jump, this horse is truly a star and has proven himself across the United States and the world in international competition. Arthur has an enormously kind and playful soul. Allison has had Arthur since he was five years old when he was “a bit wild and a spook!” She has enjoyed building a partnership with this amazing animal and seeing him develop into the amazing star that he is today. Arthur is the gentle giant in the barn, he looks forward to his beauty treatments, having his head scratched EVERYWHERE, and getting some personal affection from Allison! He is certainly a mama’s boy!

In 2007 their 8th place finish in the Jersey Fresh CCI4*-L brought Allison and Arthur substantial national recognition. The pair was named to the USEF Developing Rider List and was one of four Developing Rider combinations selected to train with the U.S. Squad preparing for the Pan American Games in Brazil that summer. Allison and Arthur finished 3rd at both the Richland Park Horse Trials Gold Cup competition and at the American Eventing Championships, leading to a successful completion at the 2007 Fair Hill International CCI4*-L.

In 2008, Arthur and Allison were again named to the United States Equestrian Team’s Training List. Arthur’s exciting 2008 spring season was capped off by a clean cross-country run at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, his first CCI5*-L, where he also won the Zeppa International Trophy for Best Turned Out. Arthur finished his 2008 season with a trip to Europe to compete in the prestigious Blenheim Three Day Event, and then went onto Deauville, France where he finished 21st in the World Cup Final. Arthur received further Year End accolades when he was named the Reserve Champion of the USEA Gold Cup Series at the Advanced Level.

In 2009, Arthur had another strong performance at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI5*-L, finishing 14th against some of the best horse and rider combinations in the world. For the second year in a row, Arthur was presented with the Zeppa Trophy for Best Turned Out. Arthur and Allison were then named to the USET Training List and received a grant to travel to Europe to gain International experience. 2010 saw more top performances from this pair, including a win at Richland Park, 2nd at The Fork CCI4*-S, 5th in the Red Hills CCI4*-S World Cup Qualifier, and selection as the Alternate to the USET Three-Day Event Team for the World Equestrian Games.

In 2011 Arthur and Allison secured a win in the Red Hills CCI4*-S, a 2nd place finish at Pine Top in the Advanced division and a top-five placing at the American Eventing Championships.

2012 saw more excellence for Allison and Arthur, including 2nd place at the Rolex CCI5*-L event, being short listed for the 2012 Olympic team, 6th place performance at the Burghley CCI5*-L, and 3rd in the HSBC FEI Classics Series standings, the highest placing ever by an American rider. Arthur was also named to the 2013 USEF High Performance World Training List with Allison following these achievements.

The 2014 season started a 2nd place finish in the Advanced division at Pine Top. Arthur completed the Carolina International CCI4*-S as well as The Fork CCI4*-S in the spring before proceeding to the Rolex Kentucky CCI5*-L where they won the dressage on an impressive 39.5! Then, thanks to the success of the Burghley or Bust auction, Allison and Arthur had the opportunity to travel across the pond and contest the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials CCI5*-L.

Allison and Arthur returned to competition in 2016 at the $75,000 Wellington Eventing Showcase, where they won the dressage phase and jumped clean around the cross-country to finish 9th overall. At the Carolina International Horse Trials CCI4*-S, they placed 1st out of a field of over 70 talented pairs. In the Advanced division at the American Eventing Championships, Arthur placed 11th in a very competitive division. At the Inaugural Stable View Advanced Horse Trials, Allison and Arthur won the dressage phase and jumped a clear cross country round to finish 11th overall. In November, they competed at the Ocala Jockey Club International CCI4*-S and placed 10th! In 2017, Allison and Arthur began their season at the $100,000 Land Rover Wellington Evening Showcase, finishing in the Top 20 with many of the world’s most talented riders and horses.

In 2017, Arthur was diagnosed with a heart condition and subsequently retired from Three-Day Eventing. Allison and Arthur had an amazing career and partnership. He will now enjoy dressage and light jumping with Allison.

Remembering Sapphire Blue B

Owner: Katie Lichten Breed: Irish Sport Horse Year Foaled: 2010

“I was very sad to hear about the passing of Steve. This was an absolute love of a horse and I will forever be grateful to the Lichten family for entrusting me with the training of their special unicorn while Katie was at school her freshman year” -Allison

“Steve” was an Irish Sport Horse by Heritage Fortunes (a Hanoverian) out of Lucy Blue (an ISH by Cruising). Allison felt very lucky to have the ride on this horse while Katie is at college. He was fantastic! Katie competed Steve through the CCI3*-S level. While Steve was only Allison’s ride for a short time the impact this horse made on everyone around him was huge.

Remembering Lionheart

Owner: Team Lionheart Syndicate LLC Breed: Westfalien Year Foaled: 2002

Lionheart

“Thank you everyone for all of your kind words through this heartbreaking time. We feel so blessed to have had the privilege of knowing Lionheart and having him at Allison Springer Eventing. Thank you to every member of the Team Lionheart Syndicate LLC for all that you have done.” -Allison

Though Lion was only a part of Allison Springer Eventing for a short time, he was a truly wonderful horse, with a tremendous amount of heart.

“Lion” was a 2002 bay gelding out of Lancer III who was formerly ridden by William Fox-Pitt and was a British Team horse. In addition to helping Great Britain secure a Silver Medal at the 2012 Olympic Games, Lionheart had a highly decorated resume including a 4th place finish at the Luhmuhlen CCI4* in 2013, a 3rd place finish at the Pau CCI5*-L in 2011, and several top ten placings at notable CCI4*s. Allison looked forward to beginning her partnership with Lion in 2014 and had hopes he would help the United States in team competition in the coming seasons.

Read the full press release about Allison acquiring Lionheart here.

It would have been impossible for Allison’s dream of acquiring Lion to ever come true had it not been for the wonderful people and owners who supported her in the Team Lionheart Syndicate LLC. Allison thanks each of them for all they did to help her start her journey with Lion who will be sorely missed by his fans all over the world.

Remembering Athlone Anto

Owner: Athlone Anto Syndicate LLC Breed: Irish Sport Horse Year Foaled: 2006

“All of us at Allison Springer Eventing are absolutely devastated to report that Athlone Anto, better known to his friends as Anthony (or to his British family as Snotty), passed away in August 2016 at our Virginia facility. Anthony was a horse who was larger than life. He had a fabulous personality, loved to work hard and also enjoyed any kind of food or a good beer. He showed tremendous talent and was everyone’s favorite from our vets, to the farriers, to the girls at the barn. The barn will not be the same without him and we will miss him very much! We would like to extended our deepest gratitude and condolences to Anthony’s wonderful owners and friends at this very sad time.” -Allison

Anthony came to Allison Springer Eventing from Europe in 2014. He was as sweet as could be and quickly became a barn favorite. Like a good Irish horse, he loved his food! Allison and Anthony completed their first Intermediate and their first CCI3*-S together in 2014, as well as their first CCI23*-L, CCI4*-S, and CCI4*-L in 2015. Anthony was a very special horse and his loss is mourned by all.
